Thorvald arrives in North America.
1002
(ca.) The brother of Leif Eriksson, he stays for two years until he is mortally wounded in a battle with Native Americans and is buried at a place named Krossaness. While some sources identify the site as Port Allerton, George Dexter later writes, “While, then, it is very probable that the Northmen reached America, it is not safe to assert that they discovered Massachusetts Bay, much less so to say that Thorvald, Eric’s son, was killed at the mouth of Boston Harbor.” The rest of Thorvald’s party subsequently returns to Iceland.
